Read on to get a better understanding of what skin is, how what we put on it affects us and how to determine what is safe to use.

Our Skin - what is it made of?

The skin is made up of the epidermis and the dermis. The outer or upper layer of the skin is the epidermis, a tough, waterproof, protective layer. The Dermis, or the inner layer is thicker than the epidermis and gives the skin its strength and elasticity. In the epidermis are keratinocytes, about 90 percent of the cells named because they produce a tough, fibrous protein called keratin. This protein provides many of the skin’s protective properties. Arranged in layers, the oldest cells in the upper layers, and with the youngest cells in the lower layers.

The dermis, unlike the epidermis, is richly supplied with blood vessels and sensory nerve endings. The skin’s main strength comes from the main structural component of the dermis, a protein called collagen. Elastin, another protein in the dermis, is the main component of elastic fibers. These proteins give skin its elasticity and the ability to return to its original shape after stretching. Elastin and Collagen are produced by cells called Fibroblasts, which are found in the dermis.
Choosing a Natural Skin Care is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Rather than the commercially made "chemical" varieties, a Natural Skin Care will ensure that your skin holds onto it is natural elasticity, while the dermal layer of the skin is nourished and able to produce quality healthy cells.

Why Choose Natural Skin Care?

Information on Natural Skin Care products - To most people, good health and well being are generally 2 of the most important things people consider, when it comes to taking care of yourself. Everyone wants to feel healthy, and everyone wants to look good. In todays fast moving world, many people are becoming more interested in eating healthy foods, getting regular excersice, and using natural products. This is because modern technology is alowing us to discover more and more about ourselves, and what the consequences are if we do not take care of our bodies. People are looking to purchase more natural products, both for what they eat (hence the huge rise in the organic market), and the products they use on thier body and around the home. Everything we need for beauty care to cleanse and take good care of our skin is already produced for us by mother nature. Healthy skin and true beauty comes from healthy growth of quality cells in the dermal layer of the skin. This can be achieved with a balanced dose of nutritious diet, regular exercise and plenty of rest, relaxation and play, as well as natural skin and body care such as the skin care we provide.

A good way to look at it is - Would you eat your Skin Care?...if the thought of that makes you cringe, you probably should not be putting it onto your skin. Up to 60% of products we apply to our skin gets absorbed into the body, so if you can not bear the thought of eating it, you should feel the same way about rubbing it onto your skin.

How to Select Natural Skin Care.

Cosmetics and personal care products are promoted based on the quality and ingredients of their formulas. Numerous products allege to be filled with expensive vitamins, oils, and perfumes. Others profess to use an all-natural formula. How can you be certain that the products you purchase contain the ingredients they claim to have or that they are safe? Read the label? Guess again! Unless you happen to be a scientist or a chemist, the ingredient list on the majority of cosmetic and personal care products will look like a laundry list of monotonous, tongue twisting names that make no sense at all. If you want to educate yourself, there are several books that will really bring you up to speed on what is in your personal care products. One would be, Dangerous Beauty, by Mark Fearer; and the other is called, Drop Dead Gorgeous, by Kim Erickson. Additionally, there are many groups that are pushing for safe products such as WomenandEnvironment.org.

Why should you have reservations about the safety of ingredients in body care products that you spread over your body and hair? There are many reasons, including a link between preservatives and breast cancer, ezcema and blood toxicity.

Always question and investigate chemical ingredients that you cannot pronounce. Shun phony “organic” and “natural” body care products that are filled with, “derived from” synthetic chemicals. Support the companies that actually create non-chemical, true organic products that are considered safe and don’t need to be tested on animals (for obvious reasons). You really can make a difference for you, the environment and your loved ones.
